Community-Led Local Food Policy Initiatives

 

Sprout began as a grassroots initiative, born through community organizing efforts of local residents. As our work evolved to supporting local farmers and working with very small family run businesses, we learned that our city’s ordinances are not modern and up to date. We talked with families who wanted to grow and sell food from their property in the city. We met families who were persecuted for raising chickens to feed their children nutritious eggs. We met people who wanted to start restaurants by beginning with a food truck investment. These people were met with barriers from our local government. Together, with community stakeholders, we have begun to change that narrative in this community by engaging citizens in the process of ordinance change at the municipal level. Here are some of the impacts we have made together so far. We aren’t done yet.
